Question Title: lympho nodes

Forum: The Urology Forum
Topic: Prostate Cancer

what kind of relation have positive lympho nodes and gleason's score?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Oliveira,

The Gleason’s score is a number between 2 and 10 that is assigned to a prostate cancer by the pathologist, based on his/her examination of the tissue specimen (obtained from a prostate biopsy). It gives the physicians an indication of how aggressive the cancer cell are. The higher the grade, there is less chance that the prostate cancer is still confined to the capsule of the prostate, and there is more chance that it has spread. One of the routes of spread other than local growth and extension into other tissues, is lymph node metastasis. The pelvic lymph nodes are usually the first to be involved. There is also a chance that metastasis could occur to more distant organs such as the bone. Therefore, if one compares two patients with similar sized prostate cancer(as determined on rectal exam or ultrasound biopsy), and similar PSA values, the patient with a higher Gleason’s score will have a higher chance of lymph node involvement.

I hope this answers your question, and wish you the best.
