Question Title: Blood discharge when urinating

Forum: The Urology Forum
Topic: Prostate Cancer

The last several days when ever I urinate a discharge of blood comes out first followed by urine. The blood seems to be the consistency of semen. There also seems to be some blood in my urine, as I can still see it after urinating.I have no pain or discomfort.I am a 39 year old male in good health. The day before this started I was exposed to a large amount of Methylene Chloride on my hands while at work. I would like to know if this could have caused this or should I seek an examination for other possible causes. Thankyou for your time and any advice.

Dear Lee,
Blood in the urine (hematuria) or a bloody urethral discharge are not normal.
When this occurs evaluation by a physician is warranted. First, hematuria is documented and infection is ruled out by urinalysis and culture.
If hematuria is present in the absence of infection 3 tests should be carried out. First, a urine sample can be sent to a special lab to be examined for the presence of cancer cells - a urine cytology. Second, a radiologic study involving x-rays of the kidneys and ureters (tubes that drainthe kidneys) with contrast dye sholud be performed - IVP or excretory urogram. Finally, a cystoscopy, examination of the urethra and bladder with a lighted telescope should be performed. These tests are very sensitive to pick up abnormalities.
More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its satellites (1 800 653 6568). We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is
your need. Please bring any physicians’ notes and lab test results that
you may be able to obtain. These will help us greatly.
