I had a Vasectomy done on 12/11/98. According to my Doctor, I may have developed a post op infection on the left side and as a result Amoxicillan 500mg was prescribed. After 24 hrs of being on the med. i felt much better, however 2 weeks later I feel some discorfort still on the left side where the vas was cut and have noticed my left testicle is larger than the right. I have had a bout with Epididymitis in the past and Cipro cleared it up. I'm getting frustrated becuase I've talked to so many other men and they didn't have a problem post op. What is the normal healing process and how long will it take. Why only the left?

Dear Vince,
Post vasectomy infection, bleeding, and /or pain is not uncommon. The range could be from 0.1% to 29% for bleeding, and the range for infection is 12-38%. It most often presents unilaterally, either the left or right side, and is often self-limiting. The usual course of resolution could be from 2 weeks to 2 months. Your previous history of epididymitis could potentially predispose you to a greater likelihood of post-vasectomy complications. The discomfort you feel following the antibiotic therapy is to be expected, since you are still just one month out from the surgery itself. The asymmetry in your testicles, left larger than right, is also not unexpected since you had infection and bleeding in that area, according to your doctor. If your problem(s) persist or worsen, you should consult your urologist.
