Question Title: Am I worsening my kidney dysfunction?

Forum: The Urology Forum
Topic: Pediatric Urology

hi,
I am 16 years old and I have only 1 functioning kidney with
Hypertension. For the past couple months I have had severe
back and Knee pain and a few weeks ago I started taking Motrin
gelcaps which are 200MG's each I have to take 3 of them about
4 times daily to keep the pain from coming back. Its really the
only thing that works for me. The only thing wronge with it is
that it makes me feel extremly fatigued. So can you answer my
question so I feel reasurred that im not hurting my kidney?
thank you

Monique

Dear Monique,

Motrin belongs to the category of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents that includes aspirin, naprosyn, indocin and sulindac to name a few. These agents act to inhibit the production of chemicals called prostaglandins which cause pain. However, these medications have the potential side effect of decreasing blood flow to the kidneys which can lead to kidney damage.
In your case, I would recommend that you decrease the amount of Motrin you are taking or switch to a different type of medicine. The fact that you have hypertension and a solitary kidney together is a potentially serious combination . You should see a nephrologist to assess the cause of your high blood pressure and joint pain. You may have a serious medical condition such as glomerulonephritis, or systemic lupus erythematosis that you should be treated medically. For now, stop taking the motrin and see a nephrologist.
