Question Title: UrinationForum: The Urology Forum
| ||||
| I am a 63 year old very active male with normal blood pressure & a 120 cholesterol level that had a RP in 1995 with a PSA of 2.4 and a Gleason Score of 8. I have been 100% continent since 10 weeks post op and sexually active via a pump. My PSA has stayed at 0 and hopefully will stay 0 forever. HOWEVER-----I have the need to urinate 3 to 5 times every night. I was doing this before my dx for prostate cancer (at least 10 years). Needless to say-- coffee, tea, wine etc. exacerbates the situation. When I am in motion and active there is no urge, but when I sit too long and lie in bed then the urge is frequent. What's up? = Dear AJ Thanks for your questions. After surgery bladder function can be altered. I am curious as to if you are emptying your bladder thoroughly. The urologist can tell with an ultrasound machine scanning over your bladder after you void in the office. If the bladder does not empty , it fills up faster. This would probably give you urinary frequency during the day also. Other patients with congestive heart failure pool fluid in their lower extremities while vertical during the day. At night, this fluid returns to circulation and gets removed by the kidneys resulting in increased nighttime urination. One way to correct this problem is to elevate their legs while sitting during the day. I would mention this to your urologist, if everything checks out, he may prescribe a medication which can relax the bladder and control the urge. Your urologist may also suggest a urodynamic test of the bladder to gain further information about its abnormal function. More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its satellites (1 800 653 6568). We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is your need. Please bring any physicians’ notes and lab test results that you may be able to obtain. These will help us greatly. This information is provided for general medical education purposes only. Please consult your physician for diagnostic and treatment options pertaining to your specific medical condition. Sincerely; HFHS-M.D. MS * Keyword: nocturia, nightime frequency
