Dear Gary, Diseases of the bowel can also lead to kidney stones. These include Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Crohn’s often attacks the ileum ( a portion of the small intestine ) . This leads to abnormal uptake of oxalate (a substance found in many foods) into the blood . This high level of oxalate reaches the kidney and causes calcium oxalate stone formation. In addition, Crohn’s disease can lead to fistula formation and recurrent infections. Fistulas are connections between two organs such as bowel and bladder In ulcerative colitis, the severe dehydration that can result from the diarrhea associated with the disease can lead to uric acid or calcium oxalate stone.
