| I had lithotripsy for a right kidney stone in 1997. Since then I had a football size tumor on my right ovary which was removed in June 1998. I also have pain in my right elbow, knee and foot. All this started after the lithotripsy. Am I crazy or could these side effects of tat procedure?

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotrypsy involves focusing energy on a kidney stone in order to break it up into fragments that are small enough to pass ot of the body with the urine. This is done with either x-ray or ultrasound guidance to localize the stone during the procedure. Side effects include bleeding, infection, risks of anesthesia, temporary decreased kidney function, and incomplete break-up of the stone requiring further procedures.
Elbow, knee, and foot pain would not be related to extracorporeal shock wave lithotrypsy. We would suggest evaluation by your internal medicine physician.
