Posted by HFHS M.D.-KR on April 26, 1999 at 11:40:08 Dear James, The silicone implants used for testicular replacement as well as breast enlargement have been removed from the market by the manufactor Dow-Corning. This removal resulted from litigation primarily involving patients with breast implants. These patients were experiencing complications related to leakage of the silicone material into the surrounding tissue and the blood stream resulting in an auto-immune like illness. Autoimmune diseases result from the body’s natural defense system gone awry. What happens is the body begins to attack itself because for some reason it perceives something foreign is present. In the case of silicone implants , it is the silicone itself that causes this response. I would suggest that you be examined by a urologist and discuss the risks and benefits of removal of the prothesis. I am unaware that these implants can result in sterility. However, you did not mention the reason for their placement initially. A pre-existing condition such as testicular cancer can lead to difficulty with conception. A thorough discussion regarding all of these issues is warranted in your case. This information is provided for general medical education purposes only. Please consult your physician for diagnostic and treatment options pertaining to your specific medical condition.
