Question Title: bump..

I suppose I have waited entirely too long to ask anyone questions on this problem.. Allow me to give a synopsis..

About 2 years ago, about halfway between the tip and base of my penis, on the top, I found what I thought was an ingrown hair, and dealt with it accordingly. (popped it..) It pretty much went away, but then about a week later started to resurface, and grow. It has stopped growing since then, and I don't know how to describe the size other than to say if you cut a marble in half and placed it there, that's what this is.. I can't detect any kind of opening, and can assure you that there's no way I could 'pop' it.. I don't know if it is still an ingrown hair, or for that matter ever was. To the touch it isn't HARD, but it's not very soft either. There's some sort of mass to it, but it is 'squishable' to a point, for lack of a better term. It is the only bump I have anywhere, and after looking at some pictures of genital warts on males, it does not look anything like them.. I of course haven't spoken to anyone about this, so I don't know if this is a normal thing or not, but I am left to assume that it isn't. I was just wondering if you have any ideas as to what it MAY be, and advice as to what I type of doctor I may see to have it properly diagnosed and treated.

I might also mention that when it appeared I was still a virgin, and had no sort of sexual contact with anyone for over a year and a half, with the exception of masturbation.. I only recently (as in, the last montha and a half) started having sexual activity again, and this has not changed or affected the lump in any way. It doesn't hurt, never did, almost just seems like it's just kind of there to worry me. Anyway, thankyou very much for your time.

Dear Carl,
I understand your anxiety about this being a penile cancer. The likelihood of this being so is quite small. By your description it sounds to most likely be a sebaceous cyst of your penis. This is basically a pimple. It may be an ingrown hair but I think that is not as likely.
I suggest that you see a dermatologist or urologist to get a more definitive answer. There is a locally recurrent but non-malignant skin tumor of this region that appears very much like such a cyst. It would need removal to make a definite diagnosis.
This information is provided for general medical information purposes only. Please consult your physician for diagnostic and treatment options pertaining to your specific medical condition. More individualized care is available through our department at the Henry Ford Hospital and its suburban locations (I-800-653-6568).
Hope that this helps.
Sincerely,
HFHS M.D.-SAL
