Posted by B James on June 14, 1999 at 16:58:52 I had Varicocele corrective surgery 16 weeks ago and my left testicle swelled to at least 5 times its normal size. Some of the swelling has subsided but the testicle is painful and very sensitive to touch and still 3 times normal size. I am worried that the right testicle is shrinking since the surgery...Any suggestions?

Persistent venous dilation is not unusual and does not necessarily indicate surgical failure. Examination of the patient in the standing position before and after he performs the Valsalva maneuver should confirm the varicocele is gone. Complications of a varicocelectomy are rare and usually minor. About three percent of patients have a hydrocele, fluid around the testis, 1 percent have an infection and a fraction of a percent have immediate recurrence.
I would revisit your urologist, get an ultrasound if necessary, and be patient. Your other testicle should not be involved and will not shrink. Sometimes the swelling on one side can encroach across the midline and mask the uninvolved testis.
