Posted by steve on August 01, 1999 at 18:52:09 I am 26 and recently noticed a small purple mass protruding through the mucous membrane in the opening of my penis. It doesn't hurt , but it is on my right side of opening and nothing on the left side. Could this be a vein or should I be worried about cancer?

Dear Steve, Penile lesions tend to cause a lot of concern in all men. Cancer of the penis, usually, is the prime concern. Penile cancer is certainly a concerning problem. If caught early it may be treatable, but if not discovered in time it could be deadly. Penile cancer is , however, uncommon in your age group. There are a multitude of penile lesions. Some are benign and others are malignant or pre-malignant. Of the benign variety some are simple infectious processes which in the long run could transform to malignancies if not properly evaluated and treated, yet others are generally unremarkable. The potentially malignant types, however, need aggressive treatment. From your descriptions the lesion that you have is in the urethra, right at the "opening of the penis". This may be a wart . This is a sexually transmitted disease, which may be contracted from infectious viruses, through unprotected intercourse. So one could give it to one's partner as easily as get it. This may be present in other spots along the course of the urethra as well as the outside of the penis. It is treatable, but could recur. Other causes iclude hemagiomas (a aormality of lood vessels. A visit to the urologist is definitely a good idea to evaluate this.. This information is provided for general medical educational purposes only.
