Question Title: Lowered Left Testicle / Discomfort

Forum: The Urology Forum
Topic: Urology - General

My left testicle seems to hang loosely (much lower than the right side) and feels as if there is no muscular attachment. When I tense the muscles in that area, the right testicle rises, but the left side does not respond. It has been this way for almost 5 years. I've never had an injury or surgery in that area. Recently, I've been experiencing general discomfort in the groin / testicle area such as dull pains in the groin and discomfort with my groin muscles on the left side, along with the need to frequently "adjust" on the left side because it is hanging so loosely. What could cause this condition and are there any corrective procedures? Thanks for your help.

Dear Chris E
Thanks for your question.
Testicles are somewhat like breast, one can be slightly lower than it ‘s mate especially if you have had inguinal surgery like a hernia repair. The location of the testicle alone should not cause you any discomfort though. The muscles of the sperm cord which control the length of testicular decent are call the Cremasters. They receive their nerve supply from the L-1-2 spinal cord segements. When the inside of the thigh is stroked, the muscle should contract and cause the testicle to rise. This is called the Creamasteric reflex. The loss of this reflex might be the early signs of a neurological disorder like a bulging back disc or a back injury from trauma ( car wreck, football etc.). This reflex can also be absent normally. It is most pronounced in young boys . Other causes of dull testicular pain include a varicocele ( dilated veins in the scrotum around the cord) or even a hernia. Since we can not make a diagnosis over the internet we recommend you see a physician to check for these things mentioned above. Once these common conditions are ruled out, you may try the use of an athletic supporter, commonly known as a jock strap. This can releive the tension related pain you maybe experiencing.
Help this has shed some insight on you symptoms and good luck. More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its urban campuses by calling (1 800 653 6568).
