Forum: The Urology Forum
Topic: Urology - General

My friend had hiatal hernia surgery and now has to wear a catheter since he had the surgery,what is the connection,and what if anything can be done to help him?no one can figure out whats wrong......

Dear Lucille
Thanks for your questions.
Hiatal surgery does not directly affect the bladder. Anesthesia, and postoperative analgesics can prevent the bladder from emptying until they have been metabolized especially if the patients has had some problems with prostatism or impaired bladder emptying before surgery. Urinary retention can resolve after temporary bladder drainage with a catheter if the bladder suffered prolonged stretching.
More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its urban campuses by calling (1 800 653 6568). We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is your need. Please bring any physicians’ notes and lab test results that you may be able to obtain. These will help us greatly.

Sincerely;
