IC/depression and treatment

I have IC.  I know that certain tricyclics are helpful in some cases.  I have experienced a great depression since being diagnosed.  I was sent to a psychiatrist to treat the depression and he prescribed remeron.  I know that is not one of the tricyclics that is normally used but his main concern was treating my depression.  I was told by a few people that remeron is also being used to help with the pain of IC.  I have been on it for 2 wks now.  I was wondering if you knew if remeron is helpful for IC?  I am desperately seeking some relief from my symptoms.  I am currently taking elmiron and going for acupuncture treatments. Thank you.

Dear Robin,

I know IC can be a painful and irritating condition.  I have written many responses to questions regarding IC on this web site.  There is a IC support group address in some of my past answers if you are interested.

To answer your current question directly, I am not aware of any clinical study that has reported results on Remeron and IC improvement.  There are off label uses for drugs all the time, and some doctors may claim excellent results, however, I cannot nor should not recommend an off label indication for a specific drug.  As with other antidepressants, the mechanism of action is not known.  Evidence in clinical studies indicates that Remeron increases central noradrenergic and serotonergic activity.  I looked through the PDR and found no relationship to IC or bladder therapy.  I think the person who recommended this therapy was simple hoping for a potential treatment of your IC while treating your depression.
