Why won't anything work????

I am a 32 year old female who has been having unbearably frequent urination for the last 3 weeks. This was set off by sexual intercourse. By unbearably frequent urination, I mean I have to urinate constantly. The amount I release varies, but I can urinate 100 times a day, easily. When I do void, I can sit on the toilet and void at least 3 or 4 times in one sitting. I was put on ditropan, which worked for about 2 days, then made my symptoms much worse. I was then taken off the ditropan and put on nitrofurantoin and phenazopyridine, which did not make my symptoms worse, but did not improve them either. I was then put on ditropan XL and just started today. I have no idea whether or not this will work, but am not confident and am getting very depressed. I cannot have sex with my husband, cannot rest, cannot relax. I have no other symptoms...no burning, no pain, just the frequency. Why would ditropan stop working two days into treatment? So far, no bacteria has been detected in my urine and no blood either. I am very frustrated. Why won't anything work???

Dear Lisa,
I think a full work-up by a urologist specializing in female and incontinence problems may be of use. A full history and physical should be performed as well as a brief neurologic exam. You may want to record the times and volumes of urine for a three day period such that the urologist when he or she does evaluate you, has a clear picture of your problem. You did mention that your urine was sterile, but if a culture is not documented, you will need to do so. Other thoughts would include bladder instability, bladder cancer, neurologic problems, tuberculosis, radiation cystitis, interstitial cystitis, and foreign body (stone).
A history and physical and urinalysis can be used to recommend further testing (cystoscopy, IVP,CMG/EMG, urodynamics, uroflow). If your problem persists and your unhappy, a visit to a fellowship trained urologist may be beneficial.
