| . | I noticed my left testicle increasing in size for the last year. I went to my Physician and after sending me for an ultrasound he diagnosed me with a Hydrocele. I met with the Urologist and he explained the outpatient surgery and what to expect after the procedure.
My question is do I have any options besides surgery? Will the Hydrocele eventually go away or decrease in size? Is there any medical research or data that shows Hydroceles decreasing in size? My hydrocele is rather big and very unproportionate compared to my right testicle so it is more than a nuisance than a life-threatening condition. This Hydrocele has not affected activities such as sports or sex however I would like to look normal again. Any replies or comments would be most beneficial. Thank you.
To your Health,

| Luke | Dear Luke,
A hydrocele is simply a fluid collection in the sac (Tunica Vaginalis)surrounding the testicle. It consists of fluid that is not reabsorbed by the body. Most hydroceles grow to a certain size and then stabilize. They are acutely caused by local injury, radiotherapy, acute nonspecific or Tuberculous epididymitis, or orchitis. It could even occur secondary to a neoplasm.
A chronic hydrocele is more common, it usually occurs in men past the age of 40. A very tense hydrocele can decrease the circulation to the testicle and cause atrophy(shrinking) and pain. This later type of hydrocele is more likely your problem.
Your ultrasound result is difficult for me to assess because I cannot see the film. As long as the testicle could be visualized with good flow and no evidence of any masses, more that not the testicle should be fine.
The only indications for an operation are pain, infection, disabling size, compromised flow to the testicle or cosmetic purposes. Otherwise a stabilized hydrocele will not cause you a problem.
To eliminate the problem, unfortunately the only durable procedure is surgery. Some people may advocate sticking a needle in it and draining it, but the hydrocele will usually return. Talk to your doctor about the different types of surgical procedures. It is not a big operation and you should go home the same day.

Is a white blood cell count of 29,000 for a 72 year old white male high, low, or normal? |

| . | I recently had a hydrocele repair. The hydrocele had become quite large - "huge" was the word my urologist used to describe it to my wife.
Within two days after the surgery, a hematoma developed in the area where the surgery occurred. The swelling now is grapefruit size, and my scrotum hangs quite heavy. The doctor says this is an unfortunate complication and that I have two options:
1. surgery to remove the blood; or
2. wait "weeks" for the blood to be reabsorbed.
I read in another section of this website on hematoma associated with vasectomy that with the latter option the scrotum may never return to normal size because the blood is concentrated in the tissue.
I have several questions:
1. What is the probability of hematoma following hydrocele repair; and
2. What is the probability my scrotum will return to normal size if we allow option 2, reabsorption by the body?
3. Is there increased risk of infection with either option? If so, how much?
Thanks. |

| . | I had a vasectomy last December. After several weeks a dull ache started in my right testical. I put up with the pain since, but in october the pain was so bad I went to see my doctor who referred me to a urologist. I had a ultrasound the following week and he told me I have a sperm granuloma more evident on the left, but on the right as well. Also a hydrocele on the left side. The radiologist said a cyst can not be ruled out on both sides on the epididmys. The doctor recommended surgery. He said part or half of the epididmys would have to be removed as well as the other problems corrected. Is surgery my only option???? Is there going to be anything left?? He also said any chances of a reversal would be zero. Thanks for your help! |

| . | Talking about hydroceles, I recently a grapefruit size of hydrocele removed through a surgery, only to find out 2 months later that it has reoccurred. I have seen 3 different urologist after my surgery and all of them do not want to give any definate answer. Their opinion is to wait and see!. I have suffered from hydrocele for almost 9 years and finally diecided to have removed. Would appreciate if somebody had similiar kind of complications as mine and reply
Thanks |

| . | I have a hydrocele to my left testicle, it is reasonably large and gives me some discomfort when sitting etc. I have been to a Urologist who gave me a course of antibotics to take over 14 days, this has not had any effect. I am told that the fluid can be removed by needle or surgery, Surgery they will turn the fluid sac inside out to prevent the hydrocele reaccurring, what is the best way to go ??? |

| . | My son had a hernia operation when he was 4 on the left side. Then when he was 5 he had a hydrocele operation. Now his left side is swollen again I have had three different opinions. I believe that the first surgeon damaged my sons blood vessels now what do I do. |

| . | I had surgery for a hydrocelle on the right testicle and after a couple of months it returned. The doctor advised me before the surgery they would insert a type of net bag to somehow control the fluid build up. Also they said the remaining fluid would go to other parts of the body.
My question is do I have to have further surgery? and can you explain what they meant by the net bag and what it does. I am not keen to go through surgery again since the first one was a disaster.
The right testicle where I had the surgery is quite large and red in appearence it sometimes drags and causes a littel pain. However, when cold it turns skin whiteish the pubic hair on this side is not very heavy compared to the other side.

I have lived with it for many years. a same amount of time I have not nad the opportuity to particapte in any intimate contact, with the ex spouse, and for 4 years since the divorce. Now question what is the likly status I will find of the remaning portin of my adult males years....It has been a long time since, will I be able to after the surgery...I do have a new develpoing relationship. However I am am now comming up on 63 years of age. Is it better to forget about it or press on forward with the surgery at this stage of my life?. In others words i don't achive an erection now, what about the future? Now i am not intersted in siring any further desendants as i all ready have children and grandchildren. But it would be nice to have a comapaion again for old age? There must be others that have had this same type of problem. I asked the doctors office for names of others in this siutation but have achieved no response to my request...... |

| . | I had a very large hydrocele and waited too long for the surgery....My right testicle enlarge to the size of a grapefruit and I had to wear baggy pants....from waiting over 6 weeks for the surgery date.....The inner sac was removed and I have had no problems in over 6 years....This does not go away and only gets worse because there is no place for the fluid to drain....take care of this as soon as you can....and feel free to write if you have any other question
