Bilateral multicystic dysplastic kidneys

by mom81lea, Mar 25, 2004 12:00AM
Our unborn baby was recently diagnosed with Multicystic Dysplastic kidney disease at 24 weeks.It is bilateral and we understand what that means.At the second ultrsasound however a second doctor expressed a concern that the disorder may be genetic.We have NO history of kidney disease in our families.Is the genetic version she was talking about Autosomal recesive polycystic kidny disease?What is the difference between the two disorders?Is there a way to tell before the autopsy is done which condition is present?  Could the ultrasound results be mistaken for anything else? Both kidneys are very enlarged and the doctor was able to show us cysts on both kidneys.There is also almost no amniotic fluid present.we have one son, who is perfectly healthy. Our second child we lost at 14 weeks last year.  The doctors do not know why, the heart just stopped. Now this. I am really confused and would appreciate any information you could give or direct me to about this. I don't understand how this could be genetic with no history of kidney disease of any kind ( prenatle or adult) on ether side.  My greatest concern is If this is genetic or not.  I desperatly want to have more children and knowing this might happen again is horrible.  Any information you could give us would be very helpfull.  Thank you for your time.

Cystic renal dysplasia, defined by microscopic features, is an anomaly of differentiation of the fetal kidney. As a result, the kidney contains primitive ducts and nonrenal tissues such as cartilage, fat, hematopoietic tissue, and often cysts.

This condition has a sporadic inheritance pattern and may be part of a larger disease.  It can be differentiated from polycystic kidney disease via imaging studies.

Other cystic kidney diseases can include the following:

* Autosomal recessive and, less commonly, autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

* Familial juvenile nephronophthisis and medullary cystic kidney disease.

* Medullary sponge kidney.

* von Hippel-Lindau disease and tuberous sclerosis.

As mentioned above, renal dysplasia has a variable genetic pattery and may be part of a larger disease.  Once that larger disease is diagnosed, then the inheritance pattern can be clearer.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
