What to take for UTI to avoid C-Diff in 91 year old woman.

My 91-year old mother is in a nursing home and has frequent UTI's.  She was hospitalized with C-Diff and the doctor has said not to give her any antibiotics or she will get C-Diff again.  She now has over 100,000? of E Coli and they are wanting to give her antibiotics.  What can she be prescribed for the UTI?

Normally UTIs in the elderly are treated if they are symptommatic (i.e. burning on urination, urinary frequency, change in mental status).  If there are no symptoms, this can be observed.

Regarding treatment, all antibiotics unfortunately can give CDiff - so the antibiotic choice doesn't really matter.  Your physicians have to weigh the benefit of treating the UTI with the risk of re-occuring C-Diff.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
