A little freaked out about STD

by tkassaii, Feb 05, 2005 12:00AM
Hello. I am a 24 year old male. about 5 weeks ago I had unprotected sex for about 10-20 seconds with a female, I did not ejaculate inside. about a week later I had protected sex with the same person. She has had multiple partnrs in the past, I am really scared that given her sexual history she may of had something. a week after the protected sex I went to the doctor and got tested for hepatitis, herpes, and Hiv, all came back negative. I have been in complete stress for the past month and it has affected my personal life. I am going to get tested again this week, which will make it 5 weeks from the incident. I have not really had any burning sensation when i urinate, or any discharge. I have not had any flu-like symptoms either, for the past day or 2 my throat has been feeling a little weird when I swallow, but it doesnt bother me that much. I was wondering if this could be due to a swollen lymph node, or could it be from smoking.

I was also worried that if youre kissing someone and they have a cut on there lip, what are the chances of getting hiv?

Just one more concern:  After the whole incident I asked her about the previous partners she has had. in july she had protected sex, and in the beginning of October she had protected sex. She then got tested at the end of October and everything came out negative. the reason I'm so scared is that she slept with 8 people last year and she says they were all protected. I know that you can still get something from oral sex, so that freaked me out to.

1.What are my chances of a serious Std, such as Herpes syphillis, hiv etc.. given that all the information I gave you is correct.

2. Can hyphondria cause you to feel certain symptoms?

I am so sorry for such a long question but, this situation has been freaking me out for a while now.

Thank you so much for all your kindness, this web site has been very useful and has helped me out a great deal. I think that what youre doing is truly great.

thanks once again.

To answer your questions:

1) Tough to give exact odds - but if all your tests are negative, then it is unlikely that you have an STD.  The odds aren't zero, but they are not that high either consider you have used protection most of the time and your tests have come out negative thus far.

2) Hypochondria can lead to anxiety which may exacerbate some physical symptoms.

As for the risk of HIV after kissing someone with a cut on their lip - the risk isn't zero, but it would be exceedingly unlikely in that scenario.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
