Pain after hysterectomy, Enlarged spleen, right kidney

by roe roe, Jan 25, 2006 12:00AM
I had a hysterectomy about a year ago ( abdominally). Since then I havr been in pain on my right side.  I have been hopitalized 2 times.  I have had tests run, and they found that ny right kidney, my spleen & my thorax are enlarged. I have seen many doctors and so far they have not been able to tell me why these organs are enlarged.  I am not on any hormone medication.  I did have a molar pregnancy about ten years ago. I was lucky enough after that to have 2 children, both by c-sections.  I had the hysterectomy because I had pain & fibroids.  My right ovary was removed during that time my left was removed 10 years ago after the molar pregnancy. The pain starts about a hands lenght from the belly button and goes around to my lower back on the right. The doctors are able to feel masses on the right side of my back but they do not show on any films I have taken.  The pain is a stabbing/aching pain. I was told that the pain might be from my kidney, but know doctor so far is sure of that.  Do you have any idea what this could be?  and do you think I should see a Nephrologist?

I would consider seeing specialists to examine why these organs are enlarged.

Kidney enlargement (i.e. hydronephrosis) is caused by infection, or any type of blockage that can cause backflow to the kidney.  A referral to a urologist - as well as tests like a CT scan or cystoscopy - to evaluate any blockages that may lead to your symptoms.

The thorax enlargement can be caused by an enlarged lymph nodes or any of the organs within the thorax.  A chest CT would be appropriate to evaluate this.

Various types of infection as well as hemotologic disorders can lead to spleen enlargement.  It is difficult to speculate on this without examination.  I would consider a referral to a hematologist for further evaluation.

I would discuss these considerations with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
