Varicocele and saxophone playing

by Ruby S, Nov 13, 2006 12:00AM
Our 13 year old son had surgery to correct a large, problematic varicocele this past summer.   He has played saxophone for the past 3 ½ years.  He takes lessons, practices a good deal at home, and also plays in the school band.  Could the saxophone playing have caused or at least exacerbated the problem for our son and could continued playing possibly cause another problem for him?  Thank you for any help you can give me.

Although possible, I am not aware that blowing into a saxophone could have caused pressure exacerbating the varicocele.

Further imaging of the scrotum - with an ultrasound - can be considered to ensure there isn't any other masses present causing the problem.  If the varicocele recurs, a repeat urological procedure may be necessary.

This question can be discussed with your son's urologist.
