Consistent protein and abnormal cells in urine, sports related?

by justees, Jul 04, 2007 12:00AM
Hi, I am a 26y/o Male, very fit as i fight professionally. Non smoker, social drinker, previously i have peed blood after my fights when i took hard shots to the body. The pee was nearly black looking but cleared up after around 5 days, i was scanned and the source of the blood was not found and my kidneys appeared normal, at this stage i don't believe there was any protein in the urine as it was tested for infections etc.

However In the medical for my last fight the DR discovered high levels of protein in my urine, and abnormal cells, i did a bunch more tests over the following 3 weeks and protein/cells were consistently found. I feel fine but have felt pain in my lower back which i had put down to training soreness but now i'm not so sure.

My GP believes it is likely a kidney disease, i am waiting to see a kidney specialist now and even though i am in a private health fund there is a 3 month wait. If you could answer my questions i would feel better knowing what i'm in for.

My questions are, what tests will the specialist perform? what disease is it likely to be? is it possible the fighting caused it? what are the likely treatments? will this affect my lifestyle and namely my fighting career?

Thank you very much for your time.    Justin.

I agree with the referral to the kidney specialist.  Fighting and exercise can lead to blood in the urine, however this should be considered only if the kidney tests are negative.

Blood in the urine can be caused by cancer, kidney stones or intrinsic kidney disease.  Tests to consider would be a cystoscopy, CT scan, blood and urine tests as well as an ultrasound.

If the blood continues, a referral to a urologist (in addition to the kidney specialist) should be considered.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
