When the esophageal sphincter, the rubberband-like muscles that opens and closes, allowing food to pass into the stomach, becomes weakened or relaxed, stomach acid can back up, or "reflux," into the throat. While occasional heartburn is common, talk to your doctor if you experience symptoms several times a week. You may have gastroesophagael reflux disease (GERD).
