Natural Stop Snoring Remedies

Snoring is the sound that results from the vibration of respiratory structures due to blocked air movement. The science behind snoring is actually quite intriguing. Snoring can be loud or soft.  The respiratory structures involved are typically the uvula and soft palate.

A recent survey of 5713 residents of Italy identified snoring in 13.8% of woen and 24% of men; this statistic jumped dramatically to 40% of women and 60% of men between the ages of 60 to 65 years.  The correlation demonstrates an increased in snoring in older adults.

There are many disadvantages of snoring.  It can led to sleep deprivation which can ultimately result in irritability, daytime drowsiness and lack of focus.  Multiple studies has shown that there is a correlation between loud snoring and an increased risk of heart attack (34% likelihood) and stroke (67% likelihood).

There are natural remedies that one can take to stop snoring.  This is preferred by many who cannot afford yet another medication.  The first step you can take to stop snoring is to change your sleeping position.  Snoring is the result of the soft palate, uvula, tongue and tonsils rubbing against each other in the throat.

When you sleep on your back, you are more likely to snore.  Moving your sleeping position to sleeping on your side will help.  It has also been helpful to raise the head of the bed 4 inches.  It can be easily accomplished by placing blocks under the head of the mattess.  Another suggestion is to lose 10% of your body weight.

Overweight people have neck tissue which is bulky.  This increase the change of snoring.   Another suggestion is to inhale steam just before bedtime.  The reasoning is that is reduces congestion and allows you to breath deeply through your nose.  Nasal strips have also been used successful to stop snoring.
