Clearing Up Confusion about HPV...

I was brought here by another member to post this. (It appears I have to "join" in order to post and edit this article.)

There seems an ever so often someone worried about getting HPV other than sexual contact. This is both true and not true. There are many different kinds of HP viruses, but not all HPV's are the same. The kind of HPV that this forum community is based on is the sexually transmitted kind, not the kind that causes warts in other areas of the body such as planter warts and common warts. Those kinds of HPV can be spread by skin to skin contact, but they are not the potentially lethal HPV that is spread through sexual contact.

Reposting what is listed in wikipedia article about HPV (Human papillomavirus):

Types 6, 11 may cause genital warts.
Types 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, and 68 are "high-risk" sexually transmitted HPVs and may lead to the development of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN), penile intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN), and/or anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN).

Common warts 2, 7

Plantar warts 1, 2, 4

Flat cutaneous warts 3, 10

Anogenital warts 6, 11, 42, 43, 44, 55 and others

Genital cancers 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis more than 15 types

Focal epithelial hyperplasia (oral) 13, 32

Oral papillomas 6, 7, 11, 16, 32

Not all warts are created equal. Common and planter warts are not the same HPV as the sexually transmitted kind.
