Just 30 minutes a day can do wonders for your body and mind

One simple act can reduce depression and anxiety, lower your risk for heart disease, improve sleep, decrease blood pressure and generally increase the quality and length of your life. What is it?

Walking for just 30 minutes a day.

Going from a sedentary lifestyle to one that includes a one-half-hour stroll each day can dramatically improve your well-being and provide some protection against a host of chronic diseases.

Here are a few ways to fit a 30-minute walk into your day:

  • Take a walk during your lunch break.
  • Have a conference call? Walk around your office while on the phone.
  • Craving dessert? Take a stroll after dinner instead.
  • Park your car a mile away from your office to get a walk in before and after work.
  • Run around outside with your kids.

Can’t squeeze in a 30-minute walk? Just get moving. Even small bouts of activity can really add up.

  • Park at the farthest parking spot when running errands.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Do jumping jacks during commercial breaks.
