You already know that exercise is key for weight control, strengthening muscles, bones and joints and disease prevention — but it can also extend your life.
In a recent study by the National Cancer Institute, researchers found that of the 650,000 study participants, those who exercised for the recommended amount (2.5 hours at moderate intensity — 75 minutes at vigorous intensity — each week, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services) gained 3.4 years of life, compared to those who were inactive. Those who exercised twice the recommended amount gained 4.2 years of life — and those who did just half still bumped their life expectancy up by 1.8 years!
For those of you doing the math, that’s 20 minutes of brisk walking, or 10 minutes of running, each day.
