WHAT CAN BE DONE FOR THOSE WITH IP?
The discovery of the gene that causes IP
may not have a practical impact on IP patients or their
families for some time. It is important to understand the
biology of the NEMO gene product in order to devise
potential therapies.
Research into therapies and better ways to treat specific
symptoms must proceed while geneticists and biochemists
strive to uncover the molecular mysteries of NEMO.
There is reason for hope. It may be possible to manipulate
other biochemical pathways to compensate for the loss of
function of NEMO.
One major advance that the discovery of NEMO allows is much
more assured molecular diagnosis in both newborn and
prenatal cases.
