Mental stimulation is one of the first lines of defense in protecting yourself from Alzheimer's and dementia.
In a 2007 study published in Neurology, researchers at a Chicago medical center performed regular cognitive testing on more than 700 participants (whose average age was 80) for up to five years. They found that individuals who were cognitively active in old age were 2.6 times less likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer's disease than their cognitively inactive peers.
