I suppose if it snowed in SA my son would tell me. The first year he was in Corpus Christi it snowed for Christmas. We had no snow and he was eager to flaunt his flakes. LOL Strange weather this year. Wonder what will happen in our area? Have a good day. irene

Snow! Hot Dog! I hate winter, but I love snow. Do you know how to drive in the snow? I'll have to call my BIL in Grand Prairie to see if it's snowing there too. Go make a snowman and have fun! Love Lisa

Congratulations! Time for a celebration... LOL I just had to use this one. Snow isn't all that fun if you have to go out in it. I hope you can sit back and drink hot cocoa and read a book. My son is in San Antonio. I'll have to ask what his weather is like. Stay warm. irene

Hi Heidi! What a sweet gesture. Right now, we have 6 ladies who will be attending the Chicago trip, along with a few guests. I wish you could attend, but we'll be thinking about everyone who couldn't make it. Thank you! Gail

Good Morning - it's 6:40 here and what good news to hear that he's still alive. It must be more than being stunned then. As for protein, do you have any evergreens in your yard? They often have tiny bugs and spiders on them. You could trim some short pieces of dense tips and place them in with the bird. He might just find some little treats for breakfast. Plus it gives him some natural perches.

Not being a pest here, just can't sleep yet because my heart's decided to be a brat tonight. Actually it's been a brat all day. Oh well. I like the idea of using a straw. I'll have to remember that one when people call about having an injured hummer. Hope you get some answers tomorrow then or better yet, maybe he'll have a good night rest and be ready to buzz away into the wild blue yonder. Many birds do that, get stunned from smacking into a window and then recover several hours later. Here's hoping for the best. If he doesn't make it, just know you've done a good job. irene

I'm an idiot. You asked about feeding him. Every 30 minutes is fine. Are you using a syringe or what? Don't leave a dish of nectar in there because he could flutter into it and turn into a sticky mess. You don't know how many times I've seen that happen when people try to feed injured hummers. As for overnight, birds (except for nocturnal types) just go to sleep when it gets dark. That's what makes caring for baby birds so much easier. I get to sleep at night unlike taking care of baby mammals. Yawn...

The two names I have are Carol Brueggeman (she does raptors) and Susan Hamack. Are either of those the one you called? If you have to care for him longer than 24 hours, you'll need some other food for him. And legally, you can't take care of him a long time. If you're still having trouble contacting a rehabber near you, your Fish and Wildlife Dept. has a list of licensed rehabbers in your area. They issue the licenses and know who has what and where. Our fish and wildlife dept. isn't real quick to help at times but you might get lucky with yours. irene

(part 2) I'm also a member of NWRA, a wildlife rehabbers assoc. and have a directory of rehabbers around the world. There are plenty in Texas, only 2 in your area and many in small towns that I don't recognize. We don't pass out their numbers as a courtesy to them (it's happened to me in the past). But if you need more help, I can contact them. Let me know. I leave my house tomorrow to see my Mom at 9:30 am, 11:30 am your time. Let me know before that if you can. irene

Sounds like you're doing everything just right for now. He can survive on the sugar water for a bit, just not long term. Right now he needs the rest and energy that you're providing. Do his wings seem symmetrical - when he sits still and when he buzzes them? If one seems a bit lower or it seems weak, he may have a fracture up high in the coracoid. That can't be fixed. Hummers are delicate. I'm always amazed at how they survive in the wild. I don't have the actual formula we use at work to raise baby hummers but yes, there's a protein mix and some enzymes added to the basic sugar water. Probably not stuff you'd have on hand. Let's hope he gets over being stunned and can fly away tomorrow. (part 1)

Thanks for the encouragement. I keep hoping for some good news, that our daughter will come home at least for awhile. But she's not doing that yet for some reason. Obviously I only know what I see and what she's willing to tell me. So I have to wait. You take care of yourself too. irene

You deserve a big bear hug! My baby started high school yesterday! It is hard to believe isn't it? Wait until they go off to college! I have been through that 3x already, it gets easier :)

Yeah, stupid me. Working out in the yard in open toed shoes. I hate shoes and only wear them to go places. I hit a hard root, thought I stubbed it but it is broken. Oh well, one more thing, lol.
Haven't heard from you in a long time. How are you doing???
Hugs,
Colleen

Just got back from NC where we saw the prettiest little yellow (or golden ) finches.. so pretty. Noticed that people put "Thistle" out for them .. we purchased some and noticed that it's also recommended for the Indigo Buntings. We brought some back (thistle) and will try in the winter when the buntings return. I doubt that the finches get down this far though. Didn't know if you knew about the thistle.. probably have plenty in Tx. (comes in little "socks".. kinda cute..
Hot as blazes here, although NC fairly warm too.. Hope all o.k. with you..
Drop a line,
Sandy

Thanks..the water was awesome. I was in our pool. Believe it or not..we just got it opened. It's just in time to close it at the end of this month. The pool needed lots of costly work done on it. My husband bartered it, so it sat waiting all summer.
