There are a lot of reasons that HCV and TX can affect bone loss. I'm thinking the connection to SVR is that after getting rid of the virus and its assault on the liver, the liver is then able to repair enough to process the vitamin D so it can assist the absorption of calcium. Vit. D goes through 2 alterations before it can be used. The first takes place in the liver and the second in the kidney. The form they test for in Vit. D assays is the form that's been altered by the liver. Better liver function, better vit. D use. The TX connection is that it IFN could alter the parathyroid, invovled in bone breakdown. Riba has been found to affect absorption, protease inhibitors, too. Then there's the estrogen thing. Women have reduced estrogen on TX; so bone loss. All so complicated.

Thanks, I did go to the site. Maybe I didn't read it carefully enough but I couldn't make out if the bone loss repaired itself. I was at clinic yesterday and they thought the concept of TX being responsible for the loss was interesting enough to send for an endocrinologist consult. They must have thought there was something to it if they're putting more on Schering Plough's bill. I am glad I'm clear of the virus, but I'm getting pretty sick of being a walking science experiment.

oops, sorry for that. I hope he really doesn't think he cured his parents...thats sad. thanks for the update

Same here. When I was Dx'd we had the whole family tested. My wife's test showed that she had had HBV in the past, but had cleared it on here own. All 4 kids were fine (thank goddness) and we made sure their vaccinations were up to date.
If I remember right, you've got me beat in number of kids department...lol. BTW...I've got a set of twins also (boy/girl). 2 kids married and out of the house...just 2 more to go.
Nov 09
(((Marcia))) Thanks for all the support. Makes it soooo much easier.
Nov 08
Thanks Marcia...and congratulations on your SVR also.
I'll most likely be stuck w/ HBV for life, but it's still pretty sweet (and kinda bitter sweet) to be able to get rid of one of them.
Nov 07
Oh no, that's just crazy =(

Ooooh! I have just come back from Paris 3 days ago and it was fabulous. I'm actually having withdrawals. That's the hard part about living in NZ, it takes us 30 hours to get to Europe. Have a most wonderful time, as I know you will, and give my love to Paris! xxxx

Just a quick note to say hi!
Thanks for a quick reply, but just wanted to check that he already has got a kidney transplant done. Any medication given to him for HCV might effect the Kidney. What should be done in that case
Oct 08
No result yet? I'm sending SVR vibes your way and wishing for the best for you!
