If there are no GASTROPARESIS Support Groups - HOW can I start one ???

by JDRF-Team-SS, Apr 06, 2005 12:00AM
Hello Kristy Mari,

First I want to apologize for not answering your question yesterday.  Also, I need to let you know that I am not a medical professional, but a mother of a boy who is living with type 1.  My son was diagnosed 7 yrs. ago at the age of three.

You may have already found this, but below is a link to a yahoo support group.

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/gastroparesis/

Another idea is to talk to your Endocrinologist and ask.  Possibly they have a bulletin board and you can post a flyer and try to start a support group in your area.  It does not hurt to ask.  Go for it.

Also, there is a cool website (non-diabteic related) where you can post different types of ads for FREE.  You simply click on your city (on the right-hand side of the page) or the city nearest to you and then look to the upper left of the page where it says COMMUNITY and there is a sub-category for GROUPS.  Then click post and type away.  Craig's List is a very well known website and has many visitors.

Go to:

www.craigslist.org then find your city on the right side.

I wish you the best of luck and hope you find support in your area.

Take care:)

Here are a coupla other sites you might find helpful if the leads from SS don't bring enough responses:

http://g-pact.org/newsletter/july04.htm  points to -->  http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pediatricgastrosupport/

(This is primarily aimed at folks dealing with pediatric gastro)

http://www.gpda.net/

(A general gastro organization site)

How To Start a Support Group:

http://diabetes.about.com/cs/supportgroups/a/support_groups.htm - 34k (This sounded promising, but you might need to register; I couldn't see the article; try the archives or webmaster ...)

Contact organizations for info on starting/joining a gastro support group (scroll to the bottom of the page at the site below):

Spport groups for gastroparesis

You can go to www.digestivedistress.com

This site has a forum. The president of the US based non-profit is a type I diabetic with gastroparesis. She has a lot of insight and suggestions regarding gastroparesis and its affect on diabetes.
