Question Title: HCG fluctuation

Forum: The Maternal and Child Health Forum
Topic: Pregnancy - Abnormal

I just went through an IVF/ICSI cycle with replacement on December 22 (3 embryos were replaced). I had a positive pregnance test on January 2 and another on January 5. On January 2 my Beta HCG was at 73; on the 5th it was at 248. On January 11 I had an ultrasound and more bloodwork. They saw a sack (hard to see) but the blood level was only at 366. They re-tested on January 13 and the HCS was at 781. I go back tomorrow (15th) for more bloodwork/ultrasound. What do you think is going on? Any hope?

Thanks for your guidance,

Susan

Dear Susan:
An hCG level doubles every 2-3 days during the first 45 days of pregnancy. Using this rule, one would expect an inital level of 248 to approximate 2000 around January 11.
An ultrasound image 4 weeks from embryo transfer should show fetal growth with heart motion.
