About Me: Female, 65, Augusta, GA, member since Mar 2010
I am an entomologist, and a retired zookeeper and RN. I have been doing my "A Look Into The Insect World" slide show and lecture for libraries, schools and interested groups for 30 years now.
I am a 25 year diabetic with Sarcoidosis, Madelung's Disease [also called Dercum's Disease, and Bilateral symmetrical lipomatosis, and and other genetic diseases. I use oxygen, and must walk on crutches because of injuries to both knees and my left ankle,
I have many huge lipomas below my waist, and must wear mens 72 inch pants to get around my hips and thighs. Some lipomas on my hips and thighs weigh about 20 lbs., while those on my knees, calves, ankles and the undersides of my upper arms are smaller. I also have lipidema in my lower legs. I had my first huge lipoma removed in 1990, had a seroma develop, and then got Pseudomonas and MSRA in the wound from the whirlpool I was getting hydrotherapy in. It took a second surgery, 6 mos later, in 1991 for the wound to finally heal.
I hope the weather cools down for you. here we've been having a lot of rain. I guess it is helping my garden, though I'd like to enjoy more sunshine. I have some of my pictures from my trip on my profile. Feel free to take a look. A few were shot with my old camera. I brought both so I'd be sure not to run out of battery or memory card space.
Just a quick note to say hi! Thanks for the belated Birthday wishes. I've been away from the site, but still taking photos. I'll have to put a few up on my profile taken with my new camera. I was just at the Boundary Waters for 5 days this month. It was an awesome trip. I wonder how are things on your end?
Thanks for your note. I was about 3 or 4. I seem to gravitate towards ants. They aren't considered the prettiest or the flashiest of insects, but they are fascinating to watch. Through the years I've captured, studied and observed many different kinds of insects. At one time I wanted to be an entomologist, but things like math and chemistry couldn't captivate my interest. I guess I'm more into the art and creative part, though I'm sure I think like a scientist. I used to read a lot of insect books, though now outdated. One I liked was Journey to the ant. The book had interesting things about ants and colorful photos. There were some fiction books I enjoyed too about insects. I'm sure they helped inspire me.
