50+ y/o married guy employed in the legal profession.  I was first prescribed tramadol after orthopadic surgery several years ago.  The necessary dosage required to make me feel "well" (ha!) has escalated over the years I have been taking this.  Because I have felt it n ... [More] ecessary to take more than the "prescribed amount" early in the RX cycle to find relief, the end of each "cycle" has essentially caused me to go through patial withdraw from this nasty drug every month.  As a result, my life has been a rollercoaster of pain, sleeplessness, flu like symptoms as well as those "good" times for years.

In late November, 2008, I found this site and the comments posted gave me the encouragement to STOP. I began tapering quickly and I took my LAST tramadol (hopefully) on 12/01.

I am soooo very sympathetic to individuals who are still currently taking tramadol and would never judge anyone who thinks it's working for them.  And any withdrawal is probably best done working in concert with your M.D.  For myself, I found that my M.D.s have lacked any understanding of how powerful this drug is.  So just as my M.D. failed to understand how addictive this powerful drug is, I doubt he would approve of my radical "tapering"/stopage.

It is really important that I find myself again off this drug.  When you find yourself counting on your fingers the number of days/hours before your next "order" can be called in, for me, it's time to stop.

If you think this drug doesn't have YOU in it's clutches, here is my very unscientic experiment.  Try stoppingT for 48 hours just one time and post how that made you feel.  If you were able to sleep through the night and awake the next whole day without a multiple of pains and symptoms that you never had before taking T, you probably aren't addicted...yet.

I have the utmost respect and esteem for those who have been able to stop and the deepest compassion and understanding for those who are still taking this drug regularly.  Finally, I can't help but wonder whether (A)  the medical community will grasp some understanding of the strength and power of this largely unregulated drug or (B) whether the FDA will one day stop in and schedule this narcotic like it ought to bhe scheduled.
