Hey Lynn! It is more my brothers than anyone else in my family. My father was an alcoholic but he passed away about 13 years ago. 3 out of my 5 brothers are alcoholics and drug addicts too. Every family gathering is a struggle to get through. They all know they are alcoholics but they refuse to change. They all have used a variety of drugs but mostly they cling to the alcohol. I don't care for it myself. My weakness has always been opiates. I lost almost everything when I hit bottom and have had a difficult time maintaining my sobriety but I have never let it have complete control of me like I did before. I, too, find NA mtgs in my area a bit off-putting and find some of their philosophies to be in direct contradiction with mine. I am attempting to remain clean and sober without following the 12 step method. Another commonality i think we both share is the prevalance of addiction in our families. Both sides of my family have different addictions, predominantly alcohol. My addiction is to opiates. If you would like an on-line friend to discuss problems with, I am also looking for a different kind of support and would appreciate talking with you. Hope to hear from you
