Hi. Best of luck next week. Eryn was out of school one day (the day of procedure) and was back in the pool swimming in 5 days. We had the procedure done in the clinic at Duke so there was no anesthesia, just the emla (numbing cream) and some lidocaine. She did great and has only had minor changes...she has developed a little bit of underarm hair and a bit more breast development, but we are 3 weeks post procedure and doctor believes this will minimize over the next few months. The incision site is TINY...only 3 stitches...now you can't even see the scar. I'll keep your family in my thoughts.
Eryn had her implant this morning at Duke. We are very fortunate in that Duke offers the implants at the clinic as opposed to surgery. Our doc is very conservative and treated Eryn for 6 months prior to suggesting the implant. We had another height/weight today and she has grown another 2 inches in the past few months. She is now 4'10" and 90 lbs. and her doc believes that without supprelin she will only grown to 5 feet...with supprelin she should achieve 5'4" to 5'8". Duke primarily does the supprelin implants over lupron shots because they believe it is less traumatic for the kids...one minor procedure (very small incision with 2 stitches) versus 12 painful shots.
Don't let your parents inlaws influence your decision...you have to be the advocate for your child.
We are at peace with our decision to have the implant. She goes to Duke on 3/10 for the procedure. Unfortunately, not all of of our family is in agreement with our decision, but we feel we are doing the best we can for our child.
Hi, my 9.5 age daughter is 4 feet 7 inches and 83 pounds - very muscular build due to year-round swimming. Her ped. endo is very conservative and has followed her for 6 months with multiple bone scans, MRIs, blood tests, etc. We were considering not doing anything (premature puberty appears to run in my husband's family) but her last bone scan showed such an advance from September. Her doctor recommended the supprelin implant. Without the implant she believes Eryn will only grow to 5 feet. With the implant she should reach between 5 feet 4 and 5 feet 8 inches, of course, these are all estimates.
