Thanks for the reply. That makes me feel a little better about getting this done. I've been a runner all my life and don't want to give that up. The dr. mentioned having to take supplements but only after determining the remaining half can't produce enough hormone. I've never had any type of health issue in my life (I'm 49) so I'm really worried about the surgery. Also, I watched a thyroid removal video on youtube. Shouldn't have done that!
Hi Liz! I was reading a post you answered back from may re: hair loss and taking primrose oil. Could you pls elaborate??? I have been taking Synthyroid for 7 yrs and my tests are fine..but the hair loss is annoying....pls help with any input you might have! Thanks
Moira
Has your doc has checked free T3 or only total T3. I believe you are on a T4 type med. With that you can get to be very high in T4 and low in TSH, to the point that docs want to reduce your med,, yet still be too low on free T3, if you have trouble converting T4 to T3. Free T3 is the most active component, that largely determines metabolism. Patients who are hypo t have reported feeling their best when free T3 is in the upper third of its range and TSH in the low end of its range. Sometimes this can only be accomplished with a T4/T3 med. such as Armour, or with a combination of T4 and T3 meds. I strongly suggest that you get the doc to check free T3, and free T4, along with TSH. And always ask for a copy of the test report. Don't accept that "everything is normal".
Just a quick note to say hi! How do you know you are not hypo right now? What were the actual numbers from your latest tests? Has the doc checked your free T3 level? Free T3 is the most active component and largely regulates metabolism. Some people have difficulty converting T4 meds. to T3, so that's why a test for free T3 is very useful.
