I'm the mother of two. My son suffered and survived cardiac sudden death in 2008 at 23. My daughter might have bouts of atrial fib - never recorded it and didn't know what it was until 2008. My brother passed in 1996 at 22 unexpectedly of an unknown heart arrythmia.
[More] We all have a low heart rate and low blood pressure. I experience a rapid heart rate with antihistamine and my brother had one the morning he passed. My rate will jump to 190-215 a lot of times when I first start running but usually levels out to 150. Mostly, I have bradycardia and my bpm while walking around, working at my desk or cleaning, runs in the middle 40's to the middle 50's. My mother, son and daughter and one other brother are about the same. My son now suffers afib since his scd which no one knows why yet.
All of us are petite and within the weight range for our size. We are extremely active, love to exercise, rock climb, swim, sports, etc.. I also love working in the yard, planting flowers and shrubs, creating rock gardens, working on my house (which I'll probably never finish completely because it's like the never ending story) and just being outside. Love t exercise also.
We took my son to Mayo in Oct, 2009 and they found that I have a short qt interval but not extremely short. Compared that to my son and thought he might have short qt syndrome, did a genetic test and did find a mutation on the sc5na gene. They reset his icd for short qt and it, so far has quit giving him inappropriate shocks. Every year at my physical, my heart rate is lower and on a 30 day monitor, it showed an average working rate of 40 and sleeping of 29-30. Had a stress test and short qt showed up worse so the dr requested I quit exercising until I got an ICD, which I did on 6/25/2010 and then I also had the geneic test ran, which was also positive. Now we are going to talk my daughter and mother into getting tested as well as my other brother and sister. Also going to see if I can get my brother's death cert updated.
9/10/2010 - my daughter's genetic test is also positive for the mutation and her ekg shows short qt as well. They will set a schedule for her on Monday to get a pacemaker/icd implanted. She's always had some issues with her chest hurting when exercising and breathing issues. Well, now it's down to findining out if this is really from mom or not. My cousin's son is having issues also (on my mother's side).
2/10/2011 - mom's test results are positive and her ekg does show a shorter than normal qtc interval - not extremely short but shorter than normal. Was pretty certain she was the genetic link.
7/6/11 - my aunt is positive but her son is negative. 2 other aunts are also negative. my aunt has flat-lined twice during surgeries and has had many other heart issues but we are really surprised that her son is negative so that means her grandson is also negative
I think it's anxiety b'cuz i have them terrible today and have gotten bad news both last night and again this morning. I use vidodan for pain but i try not to take them often i like to be able to drive and i won't while taking a narcotic. Found out last night my brother in law is dying lung cancer. Today i find out another colonoscopy again this year (i had my 1st one last Sept.) my results last year were worse than I thought. Other than that my day has been ok for pain. Take care and thanks for listening.
Just a quick note to say hi! Thanks I have a heart doctor's appt in October and they told me the same thing about my pulse. During the fluttering my heart races to between 160-- 200 per minute. So I'm watching and waiting I've noticed it's not as bad in the morning and gets worse with the more I do during the day. So this week I'm going to slow down jury duty tomorrow haha ! I will go to the hospital if things don't change this week. I haven't told my family or bf about the palpatations yet so. But they have thier own issues to deal with. Thanks for thinking of me.
Thank you for getting back to me. I stopped smoking because of the palpatations but they haven't gotten any better. I don't want to look like an idiot if I go to the hospital if it's anxiety. But it's been over a week. I took xanex today in case it is anxiety but it hasn't helped. My ortho dr said to go to the ER but i'm afaid to. It seems a little better when I lay on my chest nothing makes much sense to me.Thanks for your insight and God Bless you and your family.
Beating fast Michele
