Although it has been over a year you posted about your son, how is he doing? He sounds ALOT like I was as a child and if I can help you with a little insight to things to help manage the situation, I'll be happy to from his side of things, meaning things that may help him balance. Sounds to me like he is an intelligent young boy that needs to be challeneged properly. Hope all is well!
In answer to your question, do they come down or is it life long. Well, it is hard to say. The goal that I have for my son is to give him coping skills to work through it. Lots of what we do involves HIM being able to make choices to get through something. He calms with "heavy work". Now I tell him to do it, as he gets older---------- he will tell himself (I hope.)
One thing that I love about the "heavy work"/ physical activity is that the calming effect can be lasting. If you do enough, the calm may last a couple of days. I'm dead serious. We do things every day but my son is well regulated after a weekend of serious heavy play. I understand how you feel in realizing your son is different. I feel that way too sometimes. Hang in there!
Just wantted to wish you luck at your OT appointment. They really can do fantastic things. Something that helps with motor planning is to do "heavy work" prior to a task or homework. Google this but it is basically physical activity. A thick piece of chewing gum also organizes the brain and has a calming affect. A good thing to do on the way to school. We've been through a lot and I have lots of ideas if you need them. I'm always here. goodluck
