30 with ADHD?? Help!! see below.

I'm 30 I have struggled all my life with focus and just having my crap together.. but as a kid ADHD was never talked about and was just told to try harder.. going into my early 20's I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression even though I have never felt like I was actually "depressed" and my anxiety always came from just being overwhelmed with things to do and couldn't get it under control. Anyways long story short (imagine every ADHD symptom, I have it) my primary care dr finally said she believes that is what is going on and referred me to a psychiatrist for final testing & diagnosis. I get to the the psych this morning and I'm seeing a nurse practitioner, not even the dr.. she tells me she is going to be handling my care.. asks why I'm there (which caught me off guard considering its a referral, I assumed she had my file)- I tell her what my dr said, she then only asks me about my anxiety & depression (which I'm currently on medicine for) and she tells me she will be taking over prescribing that to me (which I'm not comfortable with) I like my primary care dr. She also said that she wasn't "sold" on ADD.. which she never even talked to me about it or asked why my dr thought that. she said she was going to put me on wellbutrin to help with depression. Depression has never really been an issue for me. I even told her that, I've never self harmed or ever stayed in bed because I was sad.. I've read a lot of negative things about wellbutrin. Should I contact my Dr and let her know?? I feel like it was a waste of time & money for her to not even listen to me or ask questions for why I was referred to her.. is this normal?

Yes, you have been sold short so to speak.  Wellbutrin is not a bad drug as anxiety meds go - but it doesn't deal with the underlaying causes of your depression (my opinion).
But, point being you went to see this psyc for diagnosis of ADD.  You did not get that.  There is no way that the nurse practitioner could know if you have ADD or not without following clinical practice guidelines (which she did not).
What amazes me is that anxiety and depression are very common co-disorders of ADD or ADHD.   And even more so with adults.  Both need to be treated.   And, in fact, if only the depression is treated, it can make the ADHD worse.

So, yes, you do need to get back to your primary care doctor and tell her what happened.   Either you need to find another psyc or actually get to talk to this psyc and see what happens.   I would also be tempted (if you don't go back) to write a letter to the psyc saying that you were sent for a specific purpose and that the nurse practitioner ignored the request and clinical guidelines.
Hope this helps.  Please feel free to ask any additional questions.  Best wishes.
