ADD and Adderol Mood Swings

My boyfriend is taking Adderol to treat his ADD.  When he's on it he's reasonable and better able to communicate.  But when he's off his meds, due to delay in getting refill or forgetting, we almost always fight.  He becomes very impatient, verbally abusive and very unreasonable.  About half an hour to an hour after he takes his meds, after an episode of verbal and emotional abuse, it's like a light comes on and he realizes who cruel he was being.  He feels ashamed and sad.  He says he feels like, during a mood swing, his empathy is gone.  That he knows intellectually that he isn't reacting appropriately but he can't seem to control it.  

I don't know what to do.  I love him very much... Help

Also, his aunt is bi-polar.  I don't know if that would matter.
