ADHD and OCD

Hi there,
I came across an earlier blog. My son has ADHD and we homeschool. Truthfully, I think it is a better environment for him. Has anyone had a child with ADHD develop OCD? He has started this as of late. Also, when he enjoys a certain topic, he will discuss it and study it to an excess.
Thanks,

I am a 30yr old female who takes Vyvance for ADD.  The medicine works wonders for me for concentration and aborbing information however it comes with some severe side effects.  One is severe skin picking.  Sometimes I do it so bad I have to hide in the house and I feel ashamed.  The second is one your son developed as well and this is the first time I've found anyone else actually say they developed the same OC tendency.  I have always been an avid reader however since on the medicine I get obsessive about sujects. I research them to death, obsess about them and want to discuss them with people.  Most people however do not read like this or get interested so they really aren't interested to hear it.  I've stayed up till 5am researching things.  Just about every week or every other for example like last night. I write up a list of things I want to research.  It can be anything, anything!!!  I write it down because so many come to mind and I can't remember.  I feel like it's a good thing, wish I'd been like this in school but it does make me amazing at my job being I'm an IT consultanting engineer which requires me to research a lot.  Sometimes though I'm so obsessed with researching other stuff like this whole issue on this discussion board; that I ignore what I should be doing at times like right now!!!  Would love to hear more feed back.  Thanks.

You are lucky that you have the ability to home school.  Not everyone has the time or resources.  A few suggestions - two great books.
Sandra Rief’s "How to Reach and Teach Children with ADD/ADHD".  is an extremely detailed book on teaching kids with ADHD.  It gives a lot of very detailed methods.
The second is "The ADD/ ADHD Answer book," by Susan Ashley.  While it is more general, it certainly is an easier read and would be my first recommendation (and maybe only one) if you were not home schooling.  This book also includes information about OCD, and the author states that is occurs in about 10 to 17% of the kids with ADHD (p.67).
  Hope this helps
