Adderall or Dextoamphetamine

by jscottb, Jul 16, 2008 04:47PM
I've been on most of the stimulants (Methylphenidate, Adderall (adderrall), and Dexedrine spansules)for my ADHD.  I've been on 30mg of Adderall (adderrall) immediate-release 2X Day for about six months now.  Before, I was on Concerta (time-released methylphenidate) but it is too expensive without insurance.  The last time I was on Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine time-released spansules), it was for a short duration as I was seeing a psychiatrist who was very reluctant to put any adult on stimulants.  I recall, though, that I had a bit more clarity and focus than I do now with Adderall (adderrall) (mixed amphetamine salts).

My question is two-fold:  Should I ask my physician (who is very understanding and patient) for the switch to dexedrine?  And if I do, would four 15mg dextroamphetamine spansules be equivalent to 60mg of mixed amphetamine salts?  I believe d-amphetamine is more potent than the other blends that are in the mixture of amphetamine salts which make up Adderall (adderrall).

Yes, ask him for dexedrine if you had success with it before.  Let him know you were more focused with it, etc.  I used to take 20mg adderal three times a day (8-noon-3pm) because I sometimes have work appts. at night, so I need to be focused all day.  When he changed me to Dexedrine, he kept me at the 20mg three times a day.  So the four 15mg d-amphetamines should be the equivalent.  Don't be afraid to ask your doctor questions and recommendations.   You know your body better than anybody.  Good luck.  Anita
