HELP!

i have a 9 yr old son with adhd.  is there a safe alternative to drugs? he just started taking tenex and i dont know how safe it is. hes kinda acting strange, i think! i dont want to give him something that might hurt him. please help me!!!!!

Ok, Tenex is a high blood pressure medicine.  But, it is used on ADHD children to control hyper activity when other medicines do not work.  It is usually not the first medicine that experts use, but one of the last medicines that they use when they have tried many other medicines.  Most of the time, Tenex is not a good medicine for ADHD, most of all when used alone.  In this case, it is not working unless you just started.  It is usually given at night to begin with because it makes the child sleepy (when he is not used to it).  If he just started, he probabbly is feeling sleepy which makes ADHD worse.  Tenex also takes time to work such as weeks and should be started at a very, very low dosage because it impacts the blood pressure ( it is a blood pressure medicine). Usually the doctor starts the child at a very low dosage at bed time and gradually increases the dosage at times per day over the period of weeks so that the body can get used toit. Now, was your son diagnosed by an ADHD expert such as child development pediatician or psychiatrist? If so, Tenex is not the first medicine that he should try unless he has other medical reasons to try Tenex and not one of the other ADHD meds.  The first medicines that he should try are medicines such as Ritalin or Metadate CD. These medicines are called stimulants and usually work better to control ADHD than Tenex.  Go back to an ADHD expert doctor and try a different med, if there are no other medical reasons with your son.
