High school and a son with ADHD

High school and a son with ADHD

My son has been on Adderall (adderrall) for 3 years now.  He is on a dose of 25 mg.  He is getting ready to start high school and we have previously had to check all of his homework, remind him to bring home the proper materials, organize his nightly homework schedule, etc.  He will for the first time have an IEP.  He has always been in private school as well.  What I want to know is, how successful have other kids been in high school without the help of their parents?  I need to set him free because after all, I cannot go to college with him.

At his age, he is probably looking forward to a bit of freedom :).  But you don't turn somebody loose in the jungle without giving them some survival skills.  The transition from a private school to a public highschool can be difficult (and at the same time very exciting).
His IEP is really important.  If he is getting the help and guidance he needs, then you can let go a lot sooner.  Frankly, I would certainly monitor the heck out of him for the first couple of months.  I think it might also be a good idea to buy the book,  "The ADD/ ADHD Answer book," by Susan Ashley.  She gives a lot of good suggestions that you will find very helpful.  Including info on IEPs.
He can be very successful in high school, but it won't be easy.  It takes planning.  It takes him being aware of what he has and how to deal with it.  That's where you come in.  I can give you more resources if you need them.  Best wishes!
