ADHD medication falls into 2 categories: stimulants and nonstimulants.
Amphetamine and methylphenidate are stimulants. Although it is not known exactly how these stimulant medications work, it is thought that they work to increase the amounts of the chemicals dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) in the brain's prefrontal cortex (PFC). The PFC is the part of the brain that sends information to control behavior, planning, and reacting. DA and NE are chemicals that help in sending that information. It is thought that children with ADHD have a deficiency of DA and NE, which makes paying attention and controlling behaviors and reactions difficult for them.
Atomoxetine is one type of nonstimulant prescribed for ADHD. Although it is not known exactly how atomoxetine works, it is thought to work by increasing the amount of NE in the brain's PFC.
INTUNIV is a treatment option for children and adolescents ages 6 to 17 with ADHD. It is a nonstimulant medication. Although it is not known exactly how INTUNIV works, guanfacine, the active ingredient in INTUNIV, has been shown to interact with certain receptors in the PFC. Research has shown that behaviors related to ADHD, such as inattention and impulsiveness, may be controlled in this part of the brain. Learn more about INTUNIV.
