Most coughs are caused by postnasal drip from a cold or allergy that irritates the throat.  Stopping the drip will usually stop the cough.  A decongestent nasal spray (it usually doesn't have the "speed" effect that pill decongestents have) will give you a quick easy test.  try it.  If it stops the cough, then thats whats causing the problem.  You can only use it for 3 days due to the rebound effect.  Your local pharmacist can probably give you some good recommendations.
