My son's medicine

My son has been on prescription drugs for ADHD for a while. I am very concerned about the long term side effects. Are there any real herbal medicines that help? I am really not interested in continuing to drug him, please help!

That would be reasonable in most cases. But I have seen the greedy side of him. I only stick with him for checkups and that sort of thing. For a real doctor I go elsewhere.

Doesn't mean he is getting a kickback.  Probably means he is rushing his patients out of the office with the simplest, fastest remedy that doesn't take any work on his part.

It is not unusual for doctors to get kickbacks on prescribing medicines. I suspect my HMO doctor is one of them. He is quick with the prescription pad for very minor problems that can be handled with common sense. His recommendations are not for generics.

In the three and a half years that I have  been posting to this site, I have seen no posts by parents giving positive results of herbal medicines for ADHD.  I have seen many posts saying we will try this or that, but they never come back to let us know of the effects.  I am guessing that if a parent found something that really worked, it would be all over this site (and many others - as the health food community would jump on the bandwagon).
What will work is learning how to deal with ADHD.  Get the book,  "The ADD/ ADHD Answer book," by Susan Ashley.  Realize that this is no easy fix.  But there are a lot of things that can be done for ADHD besides meds.
Joker117 reminds me that people who grow up with ADHD and not proper treatment tend to self medicate.  And doctors do not make $ on certain prescriptions.  The drug companies certainly do.  The insurance companies will always try to push cheaper drugs.  But to suggest that a doctor is going to prescribe a certain drug to make money off of it, makes me wonder what kind of a doctor he has been seeing.
Finally you ask about long term side effects.  Ashley has a very good section in her book on medication.  She states that meds have been used on millions of kids since the 1930's and "To date there have been no known studies suggesting the presence of negative long-term effects."
So I guess my point would be that if you want to get him off meds only to avoid the long term effects.  That's not a good reason.  There are other good reasons to take him off meds however,  The best one being that you have found another effective way to help him - hence your post.  Herbals won't do it - information will.  Start studying like his life depended on it.  Good luck.

Please do get your son off of these drugs. The side effect of these drugs can be sudden death ,stroke ,seizures, heart problem .Also there are a very lot of Children and Adults who are Misdiagnosed .

When you go to take him off of them you need to ask the Doctor how to take him off of them, because it could cause problems if you just stop them. The Doctor may give you a hard time and try and talk you into keeping him on them. But it is your job as a Parent to fight the fight for your son Health not the Doctors or the School's.

Try giving him Childrens MulitiVitamin and Omega 3-6-9 also B6 and Vitamin C I may take some time to notice any changes.

Also the blood levels should be check to make sure the drugs has not done anything to his liver and to make sure that his other blood levels are normal.

Many times ADHD and ADD  is Misdiagnosed so everything should be checked. I have giving sites to look at on some other post in here.I think everyone should look at those sites before using drugs and even if on drugs or giving to a child. You can find these sites by Googling Misdiagnosed ADHD.

I hope this has helped .

smart move I am on adderall n afraid to get off I'd rather suffer with adhd , once your son gets older let him choose if he wants to stay on pills but really enforce the idea of no adderal , desoxy , dexidrine  or any ritalin/methyl w/e   and obviously all their generic names like amphetamine.

I grew up without adderall and did well in school until high school ( for other reasons like illegal drugs)   and I had anxiety  , add adhd combo  and a few other problems  never mind my house hold being a mess .

My point is make sure it's truly helping him as I know you have his best interests at heart , not all doctors do sadly or are sold on an idea ( they make $ for certain prescriptions they make )

I would stay in touch with the doc  and another 1 if you don't trust him and make sure your kid does fine  , there are plenty of herbs that claim to help too

you can look into certain herbal remedies threw certain therapists / groups and your doctor should of offered something else as well   and there is always google or vitamin stores  and boards like this .

Try and find something other than prescription pills  between cost and random chemicals  who knows what they do in the long run , some pills haven't even been around long enough to show long term effects so they can claim there aren't many/any  .

Good luck

Most of the ADD drugs can affect growth and stuff like Adderall is addictive. How old is he?
