Probs after ADDERALL XR wears off

We have tried everything with our now 14 year old. The only thing that teachers say they say working was the Adderall XR, but it kicked in after he left in the AM and it was done by the time he got home and what I got here was a kid talking 400 mph pacing like a nervous wreck and mood swinging worse than me during PMS! Is there something that can be taken after the XR wears off like 3 pm that will work for homework focus time but not keep him up all night???

Oh, forgot to mention that Adderall XR should last 6 to 10 hours and I think that the longer duration is more typical.  It sounds like his is lasting about 7 hours?
You do not mention the dose he is on now.  But, you also might want to talk to his doc about raising the dose as I think that can prolong the effectiveness.  But, of course, this needs to be done slowly and important to make sure that he does not go "over the top".
I can provide a link to Dr. Charles Parker where he talks about rapid metabolic rates.  He says, "Don’t worry; this *metabolic rate* thing will be easy. Think burn rate: fast or slow
burn. Fast burn rates require much more medication to correct the symptom picture,
and slow burn rates require much less medication. Slow burn rates can create
unpredictable toxicity, even with “average” doses. Think about it: Fast burn is like pine
wood on a fire, slow burns like an oak Yule log. Fast needs more meds, slow rates need
lower doses. Many are simply not paying attention to the way medications burn, or the
body biologic factors that effect the actual, biologically-based burn rate of ADHD meds.
! Age, weight, body size, gender, do not consistently effect the burn rate.

Yes, there are a couple of things to try.
The first thing that could help a bit is a high protein breakfast.  The liquid products are the fastest and easiest way to get a boost.  That should help the XR be more effective.
The next thing is a low dose of adderall as soon as he gets home.  Duration is listed at 4 to 8 hours.   Ritalin has a shorter duration, but it may not work for him.   This will be all trial and error - with your docs approval, obviously.
Has he tried Vyvannse?  It is very long lasting - up to 12 hours.
Also, some real high intensity exercise will help - but this may be the wrong season for that.
